Pi Community

The SPARK programme makes Raspberry Pis available within the university on a year-round basis. It encourages, facilitates, and nurtures innovation in the use of this technology. The Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering (ENTC), together with the wider university, is building long term expertise to support a vibrant and active Raspberry Pi community.

Main Features

Raspberry Pi devices will be kept available across the university year-round, allowing students to continue experimenting and innovating each academic cycle.

A growing technical community will strengthen practical knowledge, expertise, and skills on the Raspberry Pi platform.

The programme will continue to support projects that advance beyond early prototypes and evolve into fully developed Pi-based products and services.

A vibrant, active student society will take the lead in promoting and organising activities around their shared interest in Raspberry Pi.

Moratuwa students will organise and host several Raspberry JAMs each year, taking on the role of teaching Raspberry Pi enthusiasts about the platform’s capabilities.

Moratuwa students will donate Raspberry Pis to schools, helping teachers build the long term capability to use the devices as a lasting educational resource.

Technology Demonstrators

To demonstrate and showcase the student and Pi capabilities; a number of complex and challenging projects will be implemented throughout each academic year.

MeasureUp

MeasureUP is a dual-unit device designed to accurately measure both body height and body weight, providing instant readings along with calculated BMI.It is a project undertaken by a group of Sri Lankan undergraduate students studying biomedical engineering at the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The project is funded by the World Bank and guided by the University Business Linkage Cell at the University of Moratuwa.

Hedwig- IoT Power Monitoring System

Energy efficiency is vital for industrial facilities to manage costs and minimize environmental impact. Many machines have individual power monitoring systems, but the data's scattered nature hinders effective analysis. Our project proposes an industrial energy monitoring system that centralizes and analyzes energy data for deeper insights. By enabling real-time data transmission to a centralized system, our solution provides valuable insights into energy consumption patterns and equipment performance. This empowers facilities to optimize energy usage, reduce waste, and enhance operational efficiency. The Industrial Power Monitoring System features key components, including voltage and current sensors, power measuring ICs, a microcontroller, and a cloud-based data management and visualization interface.

Smart Agri Voltaic System

Eco Nova's Smart Agri-Voltaic System, developed for the SPARK Challenge, combines cutting-edge solar energy production with sustainable agriculture to address Sri Lanka's energy and agricultural challenges. This innovative system maximizes land use by integrating solar panels with high-quality crop production, increasing yields while reducing water waste by 50%. With advanced IoT-based monitoring, predictive maintenance, and smart drip irrigation, it ensures optimal solar panel efficiency and crop health. The Agro-Plan Model, powered by GIS data, recommends ideal crop selections and solar panel layouts tailored to specific locations. Our solution supports energy independence, job creation, and food security while reducing carbon emissions and crude oil dependency, contributing to sustainable development goals.

The programme will procure a substantial number of Raspberry Pi devices to support the projects individually or required by teams.

University Society

The Pi Society coordinates seminars, guest speakers, long-term projects, and workshops to support the Pi community.

Long term Projects

Teams of students will manage and own the delivery of long term projects such as CubeSAT

Year on year Projects

Pi-based projects, whether individual or team, enjoy social media exposure that helps disseminate learning to the wider community.

Online Seminars

Guest speakers are invited to lead seminars on specialist subjects to help educate the community.

Workshops

A curated series of Sinhala workshops on Raspberry Pi fundamentals is available on YouTube, establishing a definitive catalogue of the platform’s capabilities.

School Gifting

Every year a small number of remote schools will receive a number of Raspberry Pi's as well as hands-on support on their use.

Final Year Projects

Selected high-priority projects will receive extensive social media coverage, including recorded interviews with their creators for public consumption.
